Mt. Nebo
September 18th, 2007Once again I am slow to post this experience. In the middle of August Uncle Layne and Aunt Jana invited Amelia Parry, Darl (brother), and myself for Sunday dinner. We had a good time and had great food and that is when I found out that Uncle Layne was going to climb Mt. Nebo that coming week with Aunt Jana. Being the overbearing nephew that I am I asked to go along. So Wednesday morning we started up the trail. This time at about 8:30 am considerably later than what Uncle Forrest and I had done when we climbed Loafer.

The above picture shows Uncle Layne and Aunt Jana below me on the trail. For some reason they thought they were slowing me down and wanted me to continue on up the trail. So for the rest of the hike I was all alone which was nice and at the same time lonely. In the wilderness you can feel complete solitude which can be good or bad depending on who you are.

After hiking up an extremely steep part of the trail I stopped for a short break on a peak a few hundred feet lower than Nebo. The trail up to Mt. Nebo behind me was extremely rocky and jagged. You could have fallen off either side easily - especially with the 20 -30 mph wind that I ran into. But thats part of the fun right?

I signed the paper in the little mailbox on top and then managed to get cell phone reception. I made a few calls to family and friends, drank some Gatorade and had few PayDay’s. Those little candy bars have strange powers and give you tons of energy on a hike - they have sugar and peanuts that seem to give you plenty of energy.
(Just about every hike I go on we bring PayDay’s)

PayDay is a trademark/product of The Hershey Company

^— That handsome devil just climbed about 12,000 ft. Not the highest peak I’ve been on but still high - on the way up I was getting a bit of a headache from the altitude.

A nice view down the back side of Nebo.

Hurray! After completing the hike we stopped at this road sign on Nebo Loop to take pictures and celebrate. We started at about 8:30 am and finished around 3:30-4:00 pm. Not bad.
